GDPR - Data Protection

Bonneygrove and Millbrook Primary Federation

At Bonneygrove and Millbrook Primary Federation, we take the protection of personal information very seriously. We are committed to ensuring that all information about pupils, families and staff is kept safe, secure and used appropriately.

What is GDPR?

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is the law that sets out how organisations, including schools, must collect, use, store and protect personal data.

In schools, this includes information such as:

  • Names, addresses and contact details
  • Medical and safeguarding information
  • Attendance, progress and assessment data
  • Photographs and digital records

Schools must handle this information lawfully, fairly and transparently, following strict rules set out in UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Why is data protection important?

Good data protection ensures that:

  • Personal information is kept safe and secure
  • Information is only used for clear and appropriate purposes
  • Families can trust the school to handle information responsibly

The Department for Education highlights that strong data protection practices help ensure organisations can be trusted to use personal data fairly, safely and lawfully.

What does this mean for our Federation?

At Bonneygrove and Millbrook Primary Federation, we:

  • Only collect information that is necessary to support your child’s education and wellbeing
  • Ensure data is stored securely and protected from misuse or loss
  • Train staff so they understand their responsibilities in keeping information safe
  • Regularly review our systems and processes to ensure they meet current legal requirements
  • Have clear procedures in place to prevent and respond to data breaches

We are required not only to follow data protection laws, but also to demonstrate how we comply with them through our policies and procedures.

Your rights as a parent or carer

Under data protection law, you have the right to:

  • Know what information we hold about you and your child
  • Request access to this information (known as a Subject Access Request)
  • Ask for information to be corrected if it is inaccurate
  • Understand how and why your data is being used

The Department for Education confirms that personal data must only be collected where there is a valid legal reason, and individuals have rights over how their data is used.

Sharing information

Sometimes, we may need to share information with other organisations, such as:

  • Local authorities
  • Health services
  • Educational support services

This is always done securely, lawfully and in the best interests of the child, and only where there is a clear reason to do so.

Our commitment

We are committed to:

  • Keeping all personal information safe, confidential and secure
  • Being open and transparent about how we use data
  • Ensuring parents and carers feel confident and informed
  • Continually reviewing our practices to meet the latest guidance
