Behaviour Policy
A Caring and Supportive Approach
We use a therapeutic approach to behaviour. This means we take time to understand each child — their feelings, experiences and individual needs.
Instead of asking “What rule has been broken?” we ask:
- What is this child feeling?
- What do they need right now?
This helps children to:
- manage their emotions
- build self-control
- understand how their behaviour affects others
Our goal is long-term positive behaviour, not just short-term compliance.
How We Teach Positive Behaviour
We actively teach behaviour through:
- Strong relationships – children feel known, valued and safe
- Clear routines – consistency helps children feel secure
- Positive role modelling – adults show respectful behaviour
- Praise and encouragement – recognising effort and progress
- Calm, supportive language – guiding children to make good choices
We focus on helping children understand what to do, rather than just what not to do.
Respect and Positive Relationships
We treat every child with respect and care, even when they make mistakes. This is called positive regard.
This means:
- we listen to children
- we speak kindly and calmly
- we support them to improve
- we keep expectations high while showing understanding
Children learn that they are valued members of our school community.
When Things Go Wrong
All children make mistakes — this is part of learning.
When this happens, we use restorative approaches to help children:
- understand what happened
- recognise how others were affected
- take responsibility
- repair relationships
We focus on learning and moving forward, rather than blame.
Working in Partnership with Families
We believe children thrive when school and home work together.
We:
- communicate openly with parents and carers
- share successes as well as concerns
- work together to support each child
Our Aim
Everything we do is designed to help children:
- feel safe, happy and ready to learn
- build positive relationships
- develop confidence and independence
- become respectful and responsible members of society
