Year Five Travel to the Centre of the Earth
We went on a journey to the centre of the Earth during our immersion lesson about volcanoes. In this lesson, we explored the different layers of the Earth by creating a model using coloured clay.
First, we used yellow clay to represent the inner core. We learned that the inner core is the hottest layer of the Earth. It is located at the very centre and is made of iron and nickel. Even though it is extremely hot, it is solid because of the immense pressure.
Next, we used orange clay to show the outer core. The outer core is also very hot, but unlike the inner core, it is liquid and made of melted metals. After that, we added red clay to represent the mantle. The mantle is the thickest layer of the Earth and is made of hot, semi-molten rock.
Finally, we covered our model with black clay to represent the crust. The crust is the thin outer layer of the Earth where we live, and it is also where volcanoes are found.
This activity helped us to understand the structure of the Earth and how volcanoes are linked to what happens beneath the surface. It was an engaging and enjoyable way to begin our new topic.
