Educational Visits

At Bonneygrove and Millbrook Primary Federation, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom walls. Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) is a vital part of our curriculum, providing children with meaningful, real-life experiences that enrich and deepen their understanding.

Learning outside the classroom is not only about what children learn, but also how and where they learn. By engaging in practical, hands-on activities, children develop essential skills, values, and confidence that support both their academic progress and personal growth.

Why Learning Outside the Classroom Matters

Real-world learning brings together the best of formal and informal education. Children learn most effectively when they can apply their knowledge in practical contexts, making learning more memorable, relevant, and enjoyable.

Through LOtC, we aim to:

  • Develop children’s understanding, skills, and independence
  • Build confidence, resilience, and curiosity
  • Foster social skills and teamwork
  • Inspire a lifelong love of learning

Benefits for Our Children

Research shows that high-quality learning experiences outside the classroom have a significant impact on children’s achievement and wellbeing. These opportunities:

  • Broaden horizons and raise aspirations
Children are exposed to new experiences that inspire them to aim high and reach their full potential
  • Support inclusion and engagement
Learning in different environments can re-motivate children who may find traditional classroom learning more challenging
  • Improve outcomes in school
These experiences contribute to higher attainment, improved behaviour, and increased engagement with learning

Our Approach

At Bonneygrove and Millbrook Primary Federation, learning outside the classroom is carefully planned and fully integrated into our curriculum. This ensures that all experiences:

  • Link directly to classroom learning
  • Build on prior knowledge and skills
  • Support long-term curriculum goals

We offer a range of opportunities, including educational visits, outdoor learning, and residential experiences, all designed to enrich the curriculum and support children’s personal development.

What This Means for Parents and Carers

Learning outside the classroom gives your child opportunities to grow in confidence, develop independence, and experience the world in new ways. You can support your child by:

  • Talking about their experiences and encouraging them to share what they have learned
  • Helping them make connections between trips and classroom learning
  • Encouraging curiosity and discussion about new environments and experiences
  • Supporting preparation for trips and residential visits

Our Commitment

We are committed to ensuring that all children have access to high-quality learning experiences beyond the classroom. Research, including Ofsted findings, shows that when these opportunities are well planned and embedded within the curriculum, they significantly enhance both academic achievement and personal development.

By providing a rich variety of experiences, we aim to ensure every child leaves our Federation as a confident, capable, and curious learner, ready to succeed in the wider world.
